Tarpon Springs is best known for the Sponge Docks. In the late 1800’s, early 1900’s Sponge Divers from Greece started moving to Tarpon Springs to join the budding Sponge Industry.  By 1905 over 500 Greek sponge divers were working in Tarpon Springs. This helped build a Greek Community that is now famous not only for the world’s finest sponges but for some of the finest Greek Restaurants in the Country. Many of the local Greeks are from the Island of Kalymnos also known for its Sponge Diving community. In fact, Kalymnos is Tarpon Springs’s sister city. Tarpon Springs boasts the largest per capita population of Greeks in the USA
